UCP stipulates that transhippment is allowed with the same bill of lading, but is it acceptable to present two different bill of lading within one credit?

Hi Pal,

IMHO, a beneficiary must submit a bill of lading(or other transport document)covering the whole goods itinerary, then carrier in effecting the transport, may change vessels, but the goods will reach the proper destination. Beneficary has only the possibility to present a bill of lading issued at loading port and not when the goods will probably transhipped to another vessel in another port, UCP 600 art 20 a iii is quite clear.
Naturally if the transport is possible only with two bills of lading, one from port of loading to an intermediate port, then from that port to the port of destination (with problems of getting such document within the credit terms) the credit may be worded in that way-
Other comments appreciated
Ciao

Hi Friends,

We can present 2 BLs under single presentation if the LC stipulates acceptable conditions.

If partial shipment is not allowed and transshipment is allowed a transport document must indicate the entire journey until destination with transshipment details if any.
Port of discharge, should be as per LC, vessel and voyage in both the BLs should also be the same.

This is my understanding.

Thanks.

Hi would really need to see the LC text to comment.
A through bill of lading is readily issued, don't see any reason why two sets of bills of lading are to be issued. There are several other issues which come into picture if each of the bill of lading is covering/or to cover 2 legs of shipment, namely insurance cover/ carriers liability etc. Jinugu
