Customer sent direct collection then request docs return

Hi members need your valuable opinions on remedies for the following scenario
Customer sent direct collection to a bank in Southamerica after 2 months request documents to be return. Documents got return to our bank offices then 2 weeks it appear docs are not found . Customer claiming a loss to our bank due to the fact that we did not returned originals including BL . Is there a remedy for customer to get an original to be reissue if he needs to provide proof of shipment to the insurance?
